If you’ve been following along for a while, you probably know I’m a bit of a nerd. As a chemical engineer by training, I love stories about chemistry and invention—especially when they involve persistence, failure, and ultimate success. After all, these same principles helped me create Peregrune and guide me as a runner.
One of my favorite examples is the story of WD-40.
In 1953, a chemist named Norm Larsen set out to solve a tricky engineering problem. He wanted to create a water displacement formula that would prevent corrosion on rockets. That’s right—rockets! Larsen’s goal wasn’t household fixes or squeaky hinges. He was working on a serious challenge with high stakes.
But here’s the thing: he didn’t nail it right away. It took 39 failed attempts before Larsen finally hit the jackpot. On his 40th try, he landed on a formula that worked perfectly. WD-40 stands for "Water Displacement, 40th Formula"—a name that’s a quiet nod to perseverance.
Today, WD-40 is a household staple, used for everything from lubricating bike chains to loosening rusted bolts. But none of that would have happened if Larsen had given up on the 39th try.
If you haven’t hit your running goal, nutrition goal, strength goal, or even a career milestone, take a moment to think about Larsen and WD-40. What if you’re just one iteration away? What if the next workout, the next adjustment to your training, or the next tweak to your nutrition is the key to unlocking your potential?
Best wishes on chasing your running goals!
